Tour Details

During the 9-day northern zone safari from August to October, the wildebeest migrate north, from the central Serengeti, splitting into two different routes. In spectacular stampedes, the main group crosses the Grumeti River in the western corridor. As wildebeests surge across the river, enormous crocodiles wait patiently for the opportunity to snatch them. In spite of the perilous Mara River crossing, the wildebeest continue to migrate across the Grumeti region, reaching the lush grazing in Kenya’s Masai Mara by crossing another perilous river.

Itinerary

Day 1Arusha – Tarangire National Park

We will meet you at Arusha or Moshi airports and take you to Tarangire National Park in time for an afternoon game drive. The Tarangire National Park occupies an area of 2,600 acres. In 1970, it was established and covers a distance of approximately 4.5 km. It is the large number of baobab trees in the park that will draw your attention. The park derives its name from the Tarangire River, which originates in the highlands of Central Tanzania and flows through the game sanctuary. During the dry season, the river seduces the herds of plains migrants that migrate from the desiccated surrounding area to its permanently shrunken and brackish waters. The wild animals migrate in their thousands from as far north as the shores of Lake Natron, swelling the resident population with wildebeest, zebra, and eland, elephant, hartebeest, buffalo, and fringe-eared oryx. There are thousands of thirsty migrants in the Tarangire pools during the dry season, and elephants start to dig for underground streams in the dry riverbed. There are more breeding bird species recorded in Tangangere National Park than in any other habitat in the world. In the evening, you will return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 2-3Tarangire National Park - Serengeti Park (Central Corrida - 2 nights)

A morning game drive at the endless plains of the Serengeti National Park will be conducted after breakfast. Numerous animals and birds will be available for observation. The park is home to zebras, buffalo, baboons, topis, impalas, cheetahs, leopards and recently introduced rhinoceroses. You will return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay in the evening.

Day 4-7Full Day Game drive at Serengeti National Park (Northern Corrida - 4 nights)

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of game viewing in the Wagakuria region. This area of the park is home to a high concentration of wildlife, including prides of lions that number up to 30. However, from August to October, this area becomes a wildlife paradise. This region is characterized by the Mara River, and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross it north one day and then return south the next. It is important to note that crossings are difficult to locate and sometimes depend on luck. One can see a herd near the river, but they do not decide whether they will cross or not until a couple of days later. There are kopjes, woodland, riverine vegetation, and open plains in this region. In the evening, you will return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

While en route to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will visit the historic site of Olduvai Gorge (The Cradle of Mankind), where the world-renowned archeologist, Dr Leakey, discovered the remains of the early man. After visiting the Gorge and the small museum there we continue to the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 9Ngorongoro Crater Tour - Arusha

Afterwards, descend to the crater floor for a game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest collapsed volcanic crater in the world – an area of 8,292 square kilometers of untouched natural beauty. There are approximately 30,000 animals living within the Ngorongoro Crater, which is surrounded by extinct volcanoes. Lions, elephants, zebras, hippopotamuses, jackals, rhinos, antelopes and many birds can be seen. There are many birds to be seen here, including an eagle, vulture, flamingo (in Lake Magadi), stork, sacred ibis, blacksmith plover, long-necked heron, and cattle egret. A picnic lunch will be served at a hippo pool. Later in the day, we ascend to the rim and depart to Arusha, which will mark the end of your safari.
