Trip overview

Machame Route is one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.

According to statistics from Kilimanjaro National Park approximately 50% of trekkers use the Machame Route to ascend Kilimanjaro. The route is very scenic, providing hikers with incredible views and varying landscapes.

The Machame route is relatively difficult as climbers need to be able to ascend the Barranco Wall on day four and contend with a steep incline up Kibo on summit night. That being said, there are no parts on the route that require any technical climbing skills.

The total Machame route distance is approximately 62 kilometers from gate to gate.

One can complete the Machame route on a 6 or 7 day itinerary. Both options include a climb high, sleep low acclimatisation day.

Itinerary

Day 1Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Time: 5hrs to 7hrs (Machame Gate to Machame Camp)

Distance: 11km (Machame Gate to Machame Camp)

You will be picked up in Moshi and taken to the park entrance to take registration and necessary paperwork on your first day of mountain climbing in Kilimanjaro. Once you exit the park entrance, climb up a twisting route in the rain forest to the top of a ridge. The route is more muddy and treacherous lower down. Use of trekking poles and gaiters is advised at this location. We keep going for a little bit further before reaching the Machame Camp.

Day 2Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Time: 4hrs to 6hrs (Machame Camp to Shira Camp)

Distance: 5km (Machame Camp to Shira Camp)

After breakfast, we leave the rain forest glades and walk along a route that climbs until it reaches a rocky slope covered with heather. The path swings west as it travels through a river gorge. This is the perfect time to unwind, dine, and take it easy at the Shira campsite.

Day 3Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Time: 7hrs to 8hrs (Machame Camp to Shira Camp)

Distance: 10km (Machame Camp to Shira Camp)

On this day wake up from Macheme Camp in the early morning, then ascent begins to Shira Camp. From the Shira Plateau, we go east along a ridge. When we get to the top of the ridge, we will go through a marked junction, up to Kibo’s summit. After a nice meal and a good night’s rest, it is essential to leave an excellent impression on the trail for your final trek of the day. We stop here, have dinner, and then we’ll go to sleep. Due to the fact that you are no higher than you were earlier in the day, this day is essential for your body’s acclimation to the altitude.

Day 4Baracco Camp to Karanga Camp

Time: 4hrs to 5hrs (Baracco Camp to Karanga Camp)

Distance: 5km (Baracco Camp to Karanga Camp)

On this day you will wake up early in the morning after breakfast, leaving the baracco and barranco then trekking towards a steep ridge crossing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is an amazing little energy day for just acclimatization and reserve more energy intended to reach the peak of the only highest free standing mountain in the World. You will then have dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day 5Baracco Camp to Karanga Camp

Time: 4hrs to 6hrs (Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp)

Distance: 4km (Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp)

After breakfast, travel from your Karanga Camp and proceed directly to the Barafu Hut. At this point, there is a good chance of seeing the magnificent Kilimanjaro mountain summit from all sides, which is reason enough to trek up to the peak the next day. You will then eat supper and spend the night in anticipation of the next day’s exploration of the mountain summit, as two beautiful peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo, can be seen from this vantage point.

Day 6Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp

Time 1: 7hrs to 8hrs ascend | (Barafu Camp to Summit) : Distance: 5km ascend ( Barafu Camp to Summit)

Time 2: 4hrs to 6hrs descent (Summit – Mweka Hut ): Distance: 13 km descent (Summit – Mweka Hut )

A simple breakfast of tea and biscuits will be served with the climb around 2:00am on this day. You will then reach Stella Point then takes you to Uhuru Peak, which is 5895 meters high. Standing at the summit of Africa’s highest mountain watching the sunrise is a truly magnificent experience. you will have a treasured time where you will witness the dawn, take wonderful photos, and relax for a bit before descending. Finally, you will descend to the Mweka camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7Mweka Camp to Moshi

Time 1: 3hrs to 4hrs ascend | (Mweka Camp to Moshi)

Distance: 10km ascend| (Mweka Camp to Moshi)
